Common Names:    Quaker Parrot,  Quaker Parakeet, Quaker, Monk Parakeet

Check out the website from Quaker Parakeet Society for more great information on this fantastic breed!

Origin:  The wild Quaker Parrots, referred to as the Monk Parakeet, originated in Southern Brazil, Central Bolivia, and Northern Argentina.  Some states have Quaker Parrot colonies as a natural part of wildlife.  When the population of these colonies are large, Quakers can be a nuisance for farmers and crops.  This is why they are illegal in some states.   Check in the "Legal in State" area of this website for more help in this area.  To assure that you are purchasing a domesticated Quaker, that has been handfed and socialized, there must be a closed band around one foot.  This band slips onto the foot when the baby is approximately 2-3 weeks old and has information about the breeder and state the Quaker came from.

Appearance:  Normally, and in the wild, Quakers are commonly green in color.  Quakers have a light gray forehead, cheeks and throat.  The chest feathers are also gray, but have white outlining their feathers.  This gives a very plush and rich look to the chest area.  The underbelly is green-gray in color, turning brighter and more yellow towards the feet.  A bright medium green covers the crown, nape, mantle, back, rump, and majority of the wings and tail.  Blue can be seen on the flight feathers and tail feathers.  The Quaker is considered a small Parrot and will reach 11-12 inches in length.  Size can be comparable with the Cockatiel or small Conure.  The average weight of the Quaker averages between 95 to 135 grams.  The sex of a Quaker cannot be determined by physical appearance.  A DNA/sexing test by an Aviary Veterinarian is the best way to discover the sex of your bird.

Temperament:  Quaker Parrots are very sweet, fun-loving, inquisitive, intelligent, comical, and personable birds.  They will enrich the lives of all who care enough to spend quality time with them.  Quakers are very mechanically skilled.  They have been known to open cages and figure out locking systems.  Give them plenty of interesting toys and rotate the toys weekly in their cage; or they will get bored.  Boredom is dangerous ground for the development of bad behaviors.

The Quaker Parrot is a good talker.   They speak in a very sweet voice when they converse with the ones they love.  This doesn't mean, however, that they don't have moments of loud vocalizations for all to hear.  They enjoy practicing all they have learned from their families each day.  Be careful with what you say, because you will hear commonly spoken words and phrases from this intelligent bird.  Quakers can learn songs, whistling tunes, vocabulary, environmental sounds, etc...  There speech and vocalizations are very appropriate.  They connect the proper usage and timing of words/ sounds perfectly.  My first Quaker, Cosmo, loves to laugh.  He often gets the jokes before we do!

The Quaker can become a one owner bird if they are not socialized well with everyone in the family.  It is natural for a Parrot to attach to one person as their main source of security and love.  However, the family can easily work through this by socializing the bird with all members of the household.  Buying a handfed, well-socialized Quaker will lead to years of enjoyment and make a successful start in the exciting adventure of the Quaker Parrot!  Quakers have a lifespan of 25-30 years, so it is important to commit to your flying friend from the beginning.

Color Mutations Normally, the green Quaker Parrots are what you see, but there are increasing numbers of Quakers with mutated colors, such as:  Dilute Green (Pallid), Cinnamon/Red Eyes, Cinnamon/Dark Eyes, Bue, Pearl, Pied, Lutino/Red Eyes, Yellow/Dark Eyes, Yellow Face, Albino/Red Eyes, and White/Dark Eyes.  They are all very beautiful and unique.

Diet:  A good Quaker diet must include large mixed millets, canary grass seeds, hemp seed, safflower, sunflower, peanut, fruits and veggies. Many people use a Cockatiel seed mix with added sunflowers and peanut kernels. Be careful not to add too much sunflower as Quakers can easily become "sunflower junkies". Sunflower seeds are very high in fat content and can make your Quaker become overweight if proper exercise is not maintained. Apples and Cucumbers seem to be relished by Quakers. Lettuce, spinach, chickweed, spray millet, egg food, broccoli tops, carrot tops, orange slices and non-poisonous berries can also be offered on a regular basis. Fresh water, cuttlebone and grit should also be supplied at all times.
